What is a bridging visa? Can I get a bridging visa from Australia? How long does a bridging visa last?


Depending on the applicant’s circumstances, a bridging visa may be granted automatically or by making a separate application. You will only move onto the bridging visa once your previous visa expires.

The applicant moves onto a bridging visa automatically if the visa they held when they applied in Australia ceases. In most cases, the bridging visa that is granted automatically has the same work and study rights as the visa the applicant held when they applied for a new visa. The bridging visa is granted automatically so long as your application is valid , it does have work rights.


A bridging visa is automatically granted to a person who makes an application for a visa while in Australia. The purpose of a bridging visa is to bridge the gap between your current visa expiring and a decision on the lodged application. It has to be attached to a valid visa application in Australia.


Nearly all bridging visas are applied for automatically as part of applying for a substantive visa. This is a temporary visa.

Bridging Visa A’s are granted as an operation of law. In some other cases, you must apply for your bridging visa separately. I was on it for a whole year before my visa was granted.


In case if you are granted or nominated for an employer-sponsored visa based on your skills while meeting visa requirements, you will automatically be entitled to work rights. And if you apply for subclass 8(onshore partner visa ), you will automatically be entitled to work rights while your visa is under process. It allows you to stay in Australia while your application for a substantive visa is being processed.


It can be granted if you apply in Australia for a substantive visa while you are still using a current substantive visa. A BVC can be granted if you lodge an application in Australia for a substantive visa but you do not already hold a substantive visa. A BVC does not allow you to return to Australia if you leave. It allows the person to remain lawfully in Australia after their current substantive visa ends and while their new substantive visa application is being processed. A BV simply put allows you to remain in Australian whilst a decision is made on your student visa.


Work rights bridging visas are possible through application, as under a number of conditions, work rights are not automatically granted. The status is required when applications are made for visas from within Australia. It is not automatically granted.

BVC – you do not need to apply for this bridging visa as it will automatically be granted when you apply for a substantive visa. BVB is only applicable to BVA holders. You must apply for it and it attracts a certain fee.


The number of people on bridging visas is quite high and the wait times can be extensive. You are either automatically considered to have applied for a bridging visa for some of the visa subclasses and for some you need to apply yourself for a suitable bridging visa until the immigration authorities decide on your visa application. If you lodge a subclass 8application, you will be eligible for a bridging visa.
